Arvada: Nestled in the foothills of the Rockies

Welcome to Arvada, Colo.—a thriving community with small town charm nestled between Boulder, Denver, and the Rocky Mountains.

Like so many communities in Northern Colorado, the TDS cable community of Arvada is growing. The population in 2010 was 106,433. Today, the population is estimated at 120,492—a 13.2 percentage growth.

You can’t talk about Arvada without talking about the gold rush. The very first gold found in Colorado was discovered in Arvada in 1850 by Lewis Ralston. After the discovery, settlers started arriving in droves to Arvada hoping to strike it rich.

If newcomers didn’t discover gold, they did find rich soil in Arvada, which was ideal for farming. Wheat, oats, plus fruits and vegetables thrived—and Arvada was once known as the “celery capital of the world.”

The historic downtown area of Olde Town is on the national register of historic places and the area is filled with local shops and restaurants. The area features events throughout the year including a farmers market, a Chocolate Affair—a scavenger hunt for chocolate lovers, Arvada Winterfest, a St. Patrick’s Day Festival, the Arvada Kite Festival, and First Friday Art Walks. .

Arvada is also home to an award-winning arts center district. The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities has grown into one of the country’s largest multidisciplinary arts communities. The center includes the Arvada History Museum, theaters, art galleries, plus a conference center and amphitheater. Near the Arvada Center site is “Sculptures in the Field” park which has 27 outdoor sculptures spread out on 17 acres.

Speaking of outdoor places to have fun, Arvada is proud of its local parks. There are 3,400 acres of parks and open spaces in Arvada including 100 parks and 150 miles of bike paths. The goal of local leaders is to have everyone in town be within a ½ mile of an Arvada park. These parks offer a tranquil escape for residents.

You can’t visit Arvada without noticing the stunning scenic views of the Rocky Mountains, which are home to some of the best downhill skiing and mountain hiking adventures in the country.

TDS’ Angela Gammuto, consumer sales representative in Retail, is a Colorado native and her family has lived in Arvada since her mother was 6 years old. Angela says Arvada is a great place to live and work for so many reasons.

“We are about 15 minutes away from downtown Denver and—depending on traffic—an hour away from Winter Park, Keystone, Vail, Copper Mountain, all great towns for skiing, snowmobiling, sledding, and shopping! Our office is located very close to the foothills so our view is always pretty,” Angela said.
