Change in station ownership leads TDS to take down KJTV/K19KT in New Mexico

Effective March 31, 2021, TDS will no longer carry KJTV/K19KT, the independent channel of FOX 34 News and My Lubbock TV on the Limited Basic lineup in the Albuquerque Designated Market Area (DMA). These stations are considered out-of-market stations. Both FOX 34 News and My Lubbock TV will continue to be transmitted in the Lubbock DMA where these channels are licensed.

KJTV – FOX 34 News Now is available online. Customers can watch live news here.

The majority of MyLubbock TV content is syndicated and can be found on other cable networks.

To keep TDSTV package rates as low as possible, we do not carry out-of-market channels that are available online free of charge or primarily retransmit content that is readily available on other networks. The out of market systems and channels in the Albuquerque DMA impacted are listed below.

Why can TDS no longer offer these stations?

These stations are licensed to serve a different television market, which means it is considered out of your local broadcast area. You had been receiving these stations as part of a business agreement with the station’s owner. With the change in station ownership, the agreement has ended, and TDS will no longer offer these out-of-market stations on your lineup.

What makes a broadcaster or station out-of-market?

Any broadcaster that’s located in, and broadcasts from, a different television market than the one you live in is considered an “out-of-market” broadcaster. This means that in addition to the stations you receive from within your primary television market, “in-market”, you may also receive stations from out-of-market broadcasters who happen to have signals that reach your area.

What is a television market and who determines the boundaries?

Television markets are also known as Designated Market Areas (DMAs) and are not limited by state lines or other geographic boundaries.

A DMA is a geographic area that represents specific television markets as defined by and updated annually by the A.C. Nielsen Company. All municipalities are assigned to a primary DMA. Accordingly, customers receive broadcast channels based on the municipality in which they live. TDS does not control the designation of DMAs nor determine where municipalities are assigned.

On Oct. 19, 2020, Ramar Communications announced it sold KJTV-TV (FOX 34) and KJTV-CD (NewsNOW on Fox) to SagamoreHill Broadcasting, Inc.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, Ramar Communications announced it sold KMYL (MyLubbock TV), now known as KJTV (MyLubbock TV) to Gray Media, Inc.
