It’s official: TDS’ sponsored Dixie State University joins Division I WAC

Dixie State University in St. George is officially a member of the Division 1 Western Athletic Conference. TDS is a proud sponsor of DSU athletics and congratulates DSU for making this transition to the Division I sports level.

Although there’s uncertainty surrounding the 2020-2021 athletics season, the university is still aiming to replicate the success it had at the junior college and Division II level, which led DSU to Division I.

“Our coaches, student-athletes and staff have worked tirelessly, especially in these uncertain times, to be ready for this transition,” DSU Director of Athletics Dr. Jason Boothe said in a written statement. “It will be challenging, even more so now with the curve balls the pandemic is throwing at us, but we are ready.”

DSU completed the reclassification process from NCAA Division II to Division I. The reclassification period started with the 2020-21 season when 14 of Dixie State’s 15 sports competed in the WAC. The one sport that did not compete in the WAC is football, because the WAC does not have football. The DSU football program will compete as an independent at the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS – formerly I-AA) level.

Dixie State joins California Baptist University; Chicago State University; Grand Canyon University; the University of Missouri-Kansas City; New Mexico State University; Seattle University; The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley; and Utah Valley University. Tarelton State also just joined the WAC and will be a familiar face in the seasons to come.

The Trailblazers were members of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (football since 2016) and the Pacific West Conference.

Dixie State has been a member of the NCAA at the Division II level since the 2006-07 season after several decades as a NJCAA national power. DSU currently sponsors 15 intercollegiate athletic programs, including six men’s sports (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf and soccer) and nine women’s sports (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and field, and volleyball).
