Actions and tips to make a difference this Earth Day

Earth Day is April 22. Founded in 1970 by Wisconsin U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson. Nelson’s goal was to raise public awareness about the serious nature of pollution and bring national attention to environmental causes.

Here are some tips from EarthDay.Org on how you can take action every day to protect our planet.

  1. Support the Great Global Cleanup and pick up trash while enjoying the outdoors. It is a great way to save that plastic bottle cap from the landfill while you are on your morning walk or jog!
  2. Change your diet to fight climate change! Try meatless Mondays! Check out some plant-based recipes.
  3. Try a foodprint calculator to find out exactly how your meals impact the planet.
  4. Unsubscribe to catalogs to save the trees!
  5. Calculate your personal carbon footprint and make changes to reduce it.
  6. Single-use plastics are an environmental problem. Calculate your personal plastic consumption, and break free from single-use plastics!
  7. Test your knowledge of regenerative agriculture and take our quiz!
  8. Organizing a neighborhood cleanup. Here are some tips!
  9. Consumer demand for renewable energy sources can help lower your carbon footprint. Call your utility and ask for green power.
  10. Avoid single-use plastic grocery bags. Pledge to use a reusable grocery bag.
  11. Fight food waste by composting! Learn how you can make a difference right in your own backyard.
  12. Change your paper bills to online billing. You’ll be saving trees and the fuel it takes to deliver your bills by truck.
  13. Convince your school district or office building to choose reusable utensils, trays, and dishes in the cafeteria. Take the pledge.
  14. Help protect pollinators by pledging to go pesticide-free! Sign our pledge to limit the use of harmful pesticides in your garden.
  15. Buy organic food to keep your body and the environment free of toxic pesticides. Support farmers and companies who use organic ingredients.
  16. Learn about clean energy. Test your knowledge by taking our quiz and make small adjustments to reduce your carbon footprint.
  17. Buy local food to reduce the distance from farm to fork. Buy straight from the farm or frequent your local farmers’ market.
  18. Try growing your own organic garden!
  19. Use a reusable water bottle to make a big impact on your plastic consumption:
  20. Buy products in glass or paper. Glass products are easily reused and paper is a much friendlier product to the environment.
  21. Donate your old clothes and home goods instead of throwing them out. When you need something, consider buying used items.
  22. Always read labels! Use environmentally-friendly, non-toxic cleaning products to avoid  washing toxic chemicals down the drain!
  23. Integrate a simple act of green into your daily routine. Take a shorter shower and use a water-saving shower head.
  24. Save electricity and turn off lights when you leave the room.
